AC Milan achieved a convincing 3-0 victory in their visit to Genoa in Serie A. Once on target was Zlatan Ibrahimovic and twice Junior Messias. With this win the Rossoneri ended their series of three championship games without a victory.
Genoa coach Andriy Shevchenko faced the club, where he made a glorious career as a player. Under his leadership, the Genoese recorded their third consecutive match without scoring a goal.
For AC Milan Pioli made six changes in the starting lineup after the 1-3 defeat to Sassuolo. Pierre Caillou and Fikayo Tomori started at defense with supporting midfielders Sandro Tonali and Franck Kessie. Brahim Díaz kept his spot as a playmaker and on the wings played Rade Krunić and Messias. Ibrahimovic was again at the top of the attack.
Early Zlatan Ibrahimovic free-kick and a Junior Messias header put the Rossoneri firmly in command against Andriy Shevchenko’s men. Messias got another goal in the second half to take his tally to three in his last three games. Mike Maignan made a couple of sensational saves to preserve his clean sheet it for a nice victory.
With his goal today Zlatan Ibrahimovic is AC Milan’s tenth-highest scorer in Serie A with 73, same as Filippo Inzaghi. Unfortunately a big blow for the Rossoneri was Kjær picking up an injury to his left knee and being forced off early. The Ballon d’Or nominee is unlikely to miss for long, as Pioli updated his injury after the game: “I hope Kjaer has nothing serious. He had a sprained knee, he’s a leader and I hope he won’t be out long.”
“Messias, Krunic and Diaz were good at not giving points of reference as well as Ibrahimovic at varying on the attack. The important thing is to have all the positions covered. We played the right game.”, said the satisfied Milan manager.
Milan quickly regained second place in the standings with 35 points and due to Napoli’s 2-2 draw on Sassuolo’s visit, the Rossoneri are only a point from the leader. Genoa remained in 18th place and is in the relegation zone with only 10 points.
